What a tedious piece this was to get out, in that the work involved endlessly dilating and eroding, softening and strengthening the image to net the desired effect. And I didn’t get it to quite the appearance I was after, though what I ended up with I find intriguing (however, for a better version see Digitize Map). I left a few elements floating out on their own, cuz I think they add to the wildness of the image.
